Pioneer DVR-110: Ready to Roll

CDR Info has published the specifications of the forthcoming Pioneer DVR-110, the latest in its line of premium DVD/CD burners.

The vital statistics are:

"Maximum Write Speed:

16X CAV DVD-R / +R
8X Zone CLV DVD-R DL (Dual Layer), +R DL (Double Layer)
8x CLV DVD+RW
6X CLV DVD-RW
5X Zone CLV DVD-RAM
40X CAV CD-R
32X Zone CLV CD-RW
Maximum Read Speed:

16X CAV DVD-ROM (Single Layer)
12X CAV DVD-ROM (Dual Layer), DVD-R / +R
8X CAV DVD-RW / +RW, DVD-R DL and +R DL
5X Zone CLV DVD-RAM
40X CAV CD-ROM and CD-R
32X CAV CD-RW
Buffer Memory Size: 2Mbyte"

The 110 is expected to be released in June this year. But there's no Blu-Ray support - yet. CDR Info says that Pioneer is still proceeding with development of a Blu-Ray drive, with July-August as possible release dates. Because the format specification for Blu-Ray may change, Pioneer is likely awaiting developments before committing to production.

Analysis: So your 109 will be officially superseded in June. 8x DL specification is nice (note it's the 'DVD-R DL' spec, not +R DL), and the 5x DVD-RAM is also very useful.

No prices announced yet. But expect (hopefully) an unhobbled version in a future Power Mac/iMac, maybe as a silent upgrade.

Or will you wait for Blu-Ray?
