For months and months, self-appointed "security experts" have been sounding the alarm that Mac OS X is vulnerable. To date, these efforts have been met largely with scorn and derision because not a single real threat could be found in the wild. Today, comes news of Mac/Cowhand-A, a proxy trojan that is said to attack computers running OS X. According to Sophos, a maker of anti-virus, etc software, this is the threat posed by this bit o' malware: The Trojan may copy itself to the user's Preferences folder. In order to run itself on startup, the Trojan may add itself to the user's Startup Items. As described, this malware doesn't directly threaten an infected user's data or system. I haven't been able to locate information on if (or how) this trojan is capable of spreading on its own. It's worth noting that Sophos posted information about Mac/Cowhand-A on April 22 and nothing of note has been reported in the interim. This is probably another example of hoaxware, but stay tuned...
