Panasonic UJ-835 Burner: Headed for PowerBook?

Panasonic has released details of its UJ-835 slot-loading notebook DVD burner, as MacBidouille notes. The 835 replaces the 825, which is currently used in the PowerBook G4.

The big news about the 835 it that it's a multidrive. Not the double-layer burner we're getting used to, but a DVD-RAM drive, as well as an 8x/4x DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW writer. Apple always switches off the DVD-RAM capability, but installing this model would allow 3x DVD-RAM writing, which puts a DVD-RAM disc on the desktop, which is then writable like a gigantic floppy.

CD burn speed is 24x/10x and it could slide right into your AlumBook, if you felt so inclined. On the PC side, it's supported by B's Recorder Gold, but Toast should work with an ATAPI drive like this.

No pricing for OEM units appears to be available at this stage.
