Apple has released Security Update 2004-10-27, which address an issue with Remote Desktop:

"This update prevents Apple Remote Desktop from launching applications when the loginwindow is active. This security enhancement is also present in Apple Remote Desktop v2.1."

Nevermind [again]

Last week, IGM reported on the emergence of what might have been the first confirmed OS X malware abroad, Opener. Although it was discovered in the wild, per se, this bit of nastiness has no way to spread of its own accord.

In essence, someone that had administrator access to the victims' Macs installed this malware—a shell script—and beyond direct access there's no way at this time for the contagion to spread.

So much for what might have been... yet another false alarm.
