Omniweb 4.1b6 for OS X Released
May 7th 2002
The Omni Group has released a new public beta version of its popular OS X browser, OmniWeb, now at 4.1b6.
Multithreaded and utilizing Apple's Cocoa frameworks, OmniWeb is a free, fully-native OS X browser that the Omni Group boast is one of the fastest - if not the fastest - browser available for OS X.
The latest version includes a long, long list of bug fixes too numerous to mention. Omniweb supports Speech Recognition and Java and JavaScript standards. Omniweb is also available in a wide variety of localizations, including German, French, Japanese, Danish, Swedish, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
The English version of Omniweb is a 3.2MB download, while the localized edition is a 6.5MB download.
OmniWeb is also available for older versions of OS X Server (v.1.0), and for OpenStep.
Analysis: OmniWeb gets better and better. While I use several browsers simultaneously in X, OmniWeb has not crashed once on me, which is more than I can say for IE or iCab. Still, around 6 browsers to choose from in OS X ain't a bad start. But a public plea to David T. Pierson, author of the Wannabe text-only browser: please carbonize it for OS X!
