Flash Your Pioneer 106 DVD Burner for Native OS X Support?

xlr8yourmac reports that flashing the Pioneer DVR-106 (available as a retail and OEM product) using the Pioneer 1.07 firmware may correct the 'unsupported' issue with the drives.

Normally, the retail version of the DVR-106D drive, when installed in a Power Mac, is unsupported in Jaguar and Panther by Disc Burner and iTunes.

The firmware upgrade appears to restore a missing ' - ' (dash) to the DVD RW string. Apple System Profiler also reports that the "Pioneer SuperDrive Extension" is listed as inactive when using the officially unsupported drive. The firmware upgrade may fix this problem, some readers at xlr8yourmac report.

Analysis: As ever, be cautious about flashing any firmware, as the drive may be damaged. Don't try this on an Apple SuperDrive!
