IDC: Apple PowerBooks, iBooks Take 7% of Notebook Market

The best is yet to come in Apple's 'Year of the Notebook' - but that hasn't stopped Cupertino from making significant gains in notebook market share. c|net news cites an IDC report which shows that Apple took 7% of the US notebook market in the second quarter of 2003.

This effort was enough to gain Apple fifth position, behind Dell (26.6%), HP (20.3%%), Toshiba (9.6%) and IBM (9.3%). In world-wide sales, HP (17.3%) outsold Dell (15.4%). IDC estimates that world-wide sales of notebooks rose by 22.4% in Q2 on the year-ago quarter. The US itself recorded an 18% increase in shipments of portables.

Analysis: Creditable performance on Apple's part, although the increase in Apple's shipments (as a %) would be interesting to measure against the industry increase of 9.6% for the quarter.
