PowerMac G5 1.6GHz benchmarks posted

Andy's Zone, a work of love by one Andy Foster, has posted a three-way comparison of a brand-spanking new PowerMac G5 1.6GHz, a dual-1.25GHz PowerMac and an AMD-powered PC. The only benchmark used -- Cinebench 2003; also used during the WWDC dog-n-pony show -- shows mixed results between the PC and the G5 Mac. To this pundit's eye, there's no real winner.

However, the G5 vs dual-1.25GHz Mac couldn't be clearer -- Apple's new tower is much, much faster. I would expect that even the dual-1.42GHz tower to be either equal to or somewhat slower than the 1.6GHz G5.

It will be interesting to see how the dual-2GHz Mac performs, especially once the benchmark utilities and application get optimized for the new processor/architecture. I think we'll see real proof that bandwidth does trump megahertz.
