Panther Beta Outpaces Jaguar

Apple's Panther betas demonstrate steady gains over the current 10.2.6 release of Jaguar, according to XBench testing over at MacBidouille.

The speed tests were conducted on a PowerBook and show that AltiVec, Floating Point and Quartz performance have improved noticeably. Hard disc performance is only marginally up, but PowerBooks/iBooks are generally equipped with fairly slow hard drives.

Analysis: Only one test, and there's room for much performance tweaking between now and the creation of the golden master version. The point here is that if Panther improves PowerBook performance, it should blaze away on a G5. How it will run on G3s, particularly those that lack support for Quartz Extreme, is another question though.
