iChatAV USB camera hack out

The rebels at Macs Rock have posted links and instructions on how to set up Apple's iChatAV for use with a USB webcam. By design, the mothership's video-conferencing app is compatible with FireWire webcams only, which are both fewer and more expensive.

Here are instructions on using a cheap USB webcam with iChatAV from Macs Rock:

"-Get a driver. You can download a free driver from the macam project or buy one from ioXperts. You may have to search around for one compatable with your cam.

"-Install Application Enhancer (APE) from Unsanity. You may already have this if you are running any of their fine Haxies.

"-Make sure iChat AV isn't running, then download and install iChatUSBCam [courtesy of the folks at ecamm.

"That's it! Now launch iChat AV and you should see that little camera icon beside your name! Now go book that beauty salon appointment!"

That seems fairly straightforward.

Editor's note: Even if you're not ready to give this widget a try, I would suggest that you download iChatUSB CAM now before Apple legal makes it go away. Perhaps they won't, but better safe than sorry.
