Scientific Computing & Instrumentation magazine has named Apple's PowerMac G5 as its "editor's choice" for scientific applications. Even the though this much-hyped hardware has yet to ship, the publication heaps praise on the platform: "The Power Mac G5 features a 64-bit desktop processor and a 1GHz front-side bus. Powered by the PowerPC G5 processor designed by IBM and Apple, the personal computer utilizes 64-bit processing technology for memory expansion up to 8GB and 64-bit computation, while running existing 32-bit applications natively. It offers dual 2.0GHz PowerPC G5 processors, each with an independent 1GHz front-side bus, for 16GBps of bandwidth. The line also features high bandwidth memory (400 MHz 128-bit DDR SDRAM with throughput up to 6.4GBps), and AGP 8X Pro graphics capabilities." That's a fairly ringing endorsement for the G5 for computer that's still sight unseen for most scientists. Editor's note: Can you imagine any magazine or website standing to praise a Microsoft or Intel product even before it ships?
