MacRumors.com is running a report that details upcoming G5 and G6 releases, as well as a thumbnail sketch of the processor platform's future through 2011. As noted by Mac Rumors, this information mirrors that published earlier by MacBidouille, but includes many more details. Here are the salient points: o Apple, IBM are working on parallel development of the Power5 and PPC 980 (ie G6). o The 980 will include Hyperthreading, eLiza error correction and more massive parallelism. o Altivec will split into three pipelines (vs two in the 970). o The 980 will have four Integer and four Floating point units. o The 980 will start at speeds of 2.6-3GHz and top out around 4.5-5GHz. Regarding product implementations: o G5 PowerBooks will arrive in Q1 2004. o G5 Xserve's will ship later this year. o G5 iMacs will be seen in about a year. The distant future: o The 980 is expected in late 2004. o 990 series chips are expected in 2005 ~ 2006. o 990 chips will start at 6GHz and top out at 10GHz. o 9900 chips in 2007 ~ 2008 will start at 9GHz and ramp to 25GHz. As with all rumors, this information should be viewed with skepticism. Editor's note: A few things don't jive here. Specifically, Apple won't move the iMac to the G5 until something better is available for use in its pro line. Further given an anticipated late 2004 arrival of the G6 (980) and published reports stating that the G5 won't reach 3GHz, a gap appears in this plan. Previously, other sites have stated that the Xserve will arrive later this year and that PowerBooks can be expected in early 2004. Perhaps MacRumor's report can be taken as confirmation on these two tidbits?
