Bank Dumps its Mac Customers
May 31st 2003
Mac users have lost their on-line banking support from a major UK bank, Halifax Bank of Scotland Group, notes The Inquirer.
The bank is consolidating its internet banking services. However, reading the fine print, the bank's web page notes that:
"The online service has not been developed or tested using Apple Macintosh machines and as such they are not currently supported."
This is a situation frequently encountered by Mac users; unsupported does not mean 'doesn't work' - but if it doesn't the company won't support your platform.
The bank's site notes that IE 4 or Netscape 4 or higher are required for access, fairly modest requirements. However, it's possible that the bank is employing some form of MS-based java to drive the site.
Analysis: As ever, if you're in the UK - or encounter any other service that refuses to support your platform of choice - vote with your feet and head right over to the competition if they demonstrate some semblance of support for their Mac customers.
