AT&T wants you to pay $20/mo for texts

Engadget is reporting that AT&T is putting the ax to its entry level $10/mo for 1000 text plan. Earlier this year, AT&T killed off the $5/mo plan that offered a reasonable 200 text per month. Now, customers will only be able to pay for unlimited texts at $20/mo or individual texts at $0.20 each. Engadget quotes AT&T:

Starting August 21, we're streamlining our text messaging plans for new customers and will offer an unlimited plan for individuals for $20 per month and an unlimited plan for families of up to five lines for $30 per month. The vast majority of our messaging customers prefer unlimited plans and with text messaging growth stronger than ever, that number continues to climb among new customers. Existing customers don't have to change any messaging plan they have today, even when changing handsets."

Considering you can buy 2 GB of data for $25/mo, paying $20 for simple texts seems absurd, even by AT&T standards. iOS users can take some comfort at least in the upcoming new iMessage app in iOS 5. The update will allow iOS users to automatically text each other over data rather than sending SMS.
