YouTube announces new mobile site for iOS, Android

Retooled Web app looks to make the native app obsolete.

YouTube Wednesday took the wraps off of the new mobile version of the video sharing site. YouTube first launched mobile video in 2007 with the iPhone. The iPad saw the first major overhaul to the app player on the iOS.

With the new mobile interface, a native app looks to be more obsolete as the whole site is contained inside a browser, including video playback. Users can log into the site and track subscriptions, leave comments, rate videos and other functions.

It all looks pretty spiffy, including a HQ version that looks great on WiFi. YouTube promises to roll out improvements faster than maintaining native apps.

To check out the site, navigate to m.youtube.com Once there, the site will suggest adding a bookmark to your home screen, which could effectively replace the YouTube app. Well, not replace since you can't delete it, but you can squirrel it away out of sight.
