New MobileMe Calendar shown off in beta

Following the similar update to Mail, Apple has released an update to its Calendar system on MobileMe. Users can opt-in to check out the latest/greatest as Apple puts the finishing touches on the upgrade.

Improvements to Calendar offers a compete overhaul of the look and organization for viewing appointments. Apple notes that the web app looks best in Safari 5, Firefox 3.6 and IE 8, taking advantage of the newest supported technologies.

The new Calendar also allows users to now share calendars with friends and family, allowing others to edit events for some collaboration. The new system also offers the ability now publish a calendar to a group, which then can be linked to an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac/PC. This may be handy for organizations to share a common calendar. Another nifty feature will be an invite system. If, lets say, you're hosting an event, you can send out invites via email and they can RSVP.

Lastly, Apple notes that Calendar uses the CalDAV standard, which is supported by the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Mac with Microsoft Outlook coming on Windows.

The MobileMe Calendar Beta requires iOS 4 on the iPhone and iOS 3.2 on the iPad and iPod Touch, in addition to Mac OS X 10.6.4.
