Steam gaming marketplace slated for May 12th release for the Mac


Valve says official release date for its Steam service is set for mid-May.

Macworld is reporting that Valve will release the Steam gaming marketplace for Mac on May 12th. This is great news for Mac gamers who have been anxiously awaying the launch since it was announced in March. Valve confirms Portal 2, Steam titles coming to Mac) The service was originally slated by the end of April, but appears to have slipped a couple weeks as the company polishes things up.

Steam is a game store where gamers can buy and download titles, and after which updates will be available to download right in the system. Gamers can also track achievements, and link with friends. Valve has said that many of their popular titles will be available to the Mac through the system. Those games include Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Half-Life, and Counter-Strike. It appears third-party developers will also be able to tap into the community of Mac gamers to deliver titles.
