Apple offers replacements for defective iPod Shuffle earbuds

Owners of the 3rd gen iPod Shuffle are eligible for replacement headphones under a new customer service program from Apple. Starting last week Apple has identified issues with the accessory, and is offering to replace problem headphones for up to two years from purchase.

The problems involve non-responsive controls, unexpected volume changes, and unexpected playing voice feedback. Perhaps those voices aren't just in our head.

The program covers units made between February 2009 and February 2010 with serial numbers ranging xx909xxxxxx to xx952xxxxxx and xx001xxxxxx to xx004xxxxxx.

Apple's support document details how to go about getting your replacement. New accessories are obtained through Apple's quite orderly advance replacement process where the customer provides a credit card and in exchange receives a new accessory with a pre-paid return envelop. As long as the customer returns the product within 10 days and everything is in order the card does not get charged.
