Microsoft announced today the next major version of its Office suite for the Mac OS. Mac Office 2011 will feature a number of new features and compatibilities with its Windows counterpart. One of the main new features include collaboration with co-authoring. Office 2011 will allow you to share documents without shuttling files back and forth with the hope of incorporating everyone's modifications. The Presence Everywhere feature offers real-time status updates on who's working on what. This is accomplished via an Internet link using Office Web Apps via a Windows Live ID account or SharePoint Technologies. The addition will also bring parity to similar functions on Office 2010 for Windows. Another major new feature is the addition of Outlook for the Mac. Microsoft announced plans to include Outlook in the next Office release (called Mac Office 2010 then). With its return, Outlook will replace the long-running Entourage email system on the Mac. Outlook will be coded in OS X's Cocoa for added performance, interoperability, and general OS X goodness on current and future version of the Mac OS. Outlook will also allow importing of .pst files, which contain copies of messages, calendar events, and other Outlook items. Outlook will also add Spotlight support for integrated OS X searching, in addition to Informational Rights Management (IRM). The addition of IRM will allow collaboration with Windows users for items that need to be protected from unintended distribution. The final major feature will be the Mac Ribbon, a new user interface. Ribbon seems to attempt to bring the Mac interface closer to the Windows, while still retaining elements for legacy users. Mac Office 2011 is slated for release later this year.
