Snow Leopard looks to add malware protection

Intego has spotted what appears to be a malware defense in the upcoming Mac OS X 10.6. Snow Leopard is to ship on Friday.

The security developer noted that the measure appears to warn users when attempting to install software containing a known threat. While the OS X is widely credited as being relatively secure, not much can be done when users grant bad apps administrative access. OS X currently warns users when opening freshly downloaded software, but that's no more than a speed bump as nearly every time the user intended to download the file. If the user knew a piece of software contained malware, they probably wouldn't have downloaded it in the first place.

It will be interesting to see details emerge of this built in security function. Particularly how, and how often, will it be updated to address ever changing threats.
