Through Sunday, Apple said moved over 1 million iPhone 3G S units. The news of a blockbuster product launch actually may be somewhat overshadowed by the fact Steve Jobs is quoted in the press release. That would seem to indicate he’s back to work as it’s the first time he’s quoted since he left. It could also be a little gamesmanship as a rumor came out over the weekend that Jobs has a liver transplant two months ago. “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.” 1 million iPhones is a very big deal since it met last year’s launch sales while being contained to fewer countries. Last year, the iPhone was launched in 21 countries, but this year was launched in only eight. The 3G S also met stiff headwinds with the economy, limited qualified 3G upgraders, and improved competition. The sales total essentially doubled expectations as financial analysts pegged the launch at about 500,000. Perhaps even more impressive, Apple and AT&T managed a relatively orderly launce, due to a massive pre-order effort with some iPhone sales location see short to no waits. As IGM reported, Apple is offering iTunes credit for customers who had problems, but from most all accounts the activation process is much improved over last year.
