Apple has sent out word to iPhone developers to start testing push notification in 3.0

The email update isn’t intended for developers making apps with notification, but for all developers to test notification in apps. Apple has asked developers to check out the AP news service’s app.

Apple’s push service uses a constant connection to Apple’s servers. Apple will forward notifications from third parties through this connection. By facilitating this single connection, Apple is providing developers an avenue for various types of alerts. This setup allows the iPhone to only have one background process running which saves on memory, CPU, and battery consumption. In the case of the AP app, users can get instant notification of news.

The call for testers is certainly another sign Apple is making strides on its iPhone OS 3.0 release. The OS is currently in its 5th beta release to developers, and is expected to be released in June, perhaps timed with WWDC the week of June 8th.
