One way to beat the iPhone: Give it away RIM bested the iPhone last quarter for smartphone U.S. sales. The Curve 8300 series outsold the iPhone 3G for the first calendar year of 2009. The sales represent all model sales for all Curves and iPhones. Behind the iPhone were the BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Pearl, and T-Mobile G1 rounded out the top 5. During the quarter Verizon pulled out the big guns and offered a buy-one-get-one free promotion on the Curve. That surely boosted numbers among “dumb” phone customers and budget users.
