Apple's iTunes app store hit its 1 billionth download Thursday afternoon. The company announced a contest to mark the occasion less than two weeks ago. That roughly means Apple served over 70 million apps in quite a short period of time. If Apple's novelty counter actually represented Apple's expectations, our calculations put the date about 60 days out.
iPod and iPhone users buying apps were automatically entered into a sweepstakes promotion. Customers buying apps had a chance to win $10,000 iTunes gift card, iPod Touch, Apple Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. In total, the lucky winner won have $13,746 worth of loot.
