Overclocking the Power Mac G4s
September 30th 2002
xlr8yourmac is detailing readers' feedback on overclocking the new DP G4 867's 133MHz bus to 167MHz. This, in theory, would give the Power Mac roughly the performance of a DP 1 GHz G4.
One user has achieved overclocking up to 1.083GHz, which, in the test results published, cuts 1-2 seconds off some CPU-intensive tests.
It appears, at this early stage, that the system bus speed on the new machines is controlled completely in software, according to reader reports. It has been possible for some years, of course, to vary bus speed on other Macs using software only, albeit at cost of some possible instability and/or excessive heat.
Caution: Perform this operation at your own risk.
