MCE announced an OptiBay Hard Drive for the new MacBook Pro Unibody. MCE's innovative OptiBay line has been expanded for the new MacBook Pro. The upgrade replaces the internal DVD/CD drive to accommodate a second hard drive. The upgrade comes in flavors ranging from 250 GB to 500 GB and weigh around 5 ounces. For performance needs, a 320 GB drive supports 7200 RPM drive and 150 MB/sec max transfer speeds, 50% faster than the 5400 RPM drives. If the original Apple drive is also replaced, the OptiBay allows up to 1 TB of storage. Otherwise, the maximum available is 820 GB as Apple's only ships up to 320 GB drives as build-to-order. Why would someone forsake their DVD/CD drive? Video professionals for starters who rarely mount CD/DVDs be are ever in need of additional space. MCE, however, sells an external USB 2.0 enclosure for the jettisoned drive for the best of all worlds. MCE sells the drives as a do-it-yourself kit or customers can send in their laptop. Pricing starts at $189. MCE OptiBay
