Yes, Steve is away, but the 30,000 or so people left behind are hardly slouches and here's a pair of anecdotes designed to show that—despite endless investor whinging and speculation—Apple will be just fine during the time its über CEO Steve Jobs away on medical leave. First off, here's a story (Fortune) of Tim Cook, Apple's Chief Operating Officer and the man named to handle day-to-day operational issues while Jobs is out, in which a subordinate "This is really bad," Cook informed a group of employees about a manufacturing problem. "Someone should be in China driving this." Thirty minutes into that meeting Cook looked at Sabih Khan, a key operations executive, and abruptly asked, without a trace of emotion, "Why are you still here?" Interestingly, Khan still works for Cook, a statement about the depth both men's character and an obvious shared respect. [Click through to continue] A shared appreciation of Apple Yes, Walt Mossberg is a fan of Steve Jobs and Apple, though it would be wrong to say that he's a sycophant. Yes, Macs, iPods and iPhone do have faults, according to the pundit, it's just that they generally have fewer than anything else out there. That said, Mossberg's also keenly aware that there's more to Apple than just its super CEO. That's awesome, Mossberg and the interviewer taking turns lauding Apple and its employees.
