AdMob confirms iPod touch's December rise

Here's fresh data that confirms an earlier IGM report showing iPod touch web usage rose 300 percent on Christmas and the days leading up to the holiday.

AdMob, the folks who facilitate and monitor online advertising, have published their latest mobile metrics report. Unlike a lot of web metrics company's, who want your first born and a lien on your kidneys, AdMob offers a free version of their report that is jammed packed with tasty details.

Specifically, AdMob tells the story of the iPod touch--the best selling holiday gift item and sleeper product hit of 2008.

Amazingly, iPod Touch requests doubled overnight on Christmas and remained strong throughout the remainder of the month. In December, the iPod Touch generated 3.4 times more requests than in November.

iPod touch. The funnest iPod ever

Big, big gains for the iPod touch and not just in the US.

Also, AdMob has also published a pretty, pretty smart phone market share graph that shows that the iPhone dominates smartphone internet usage. That's been the case for some time, but Apple's now on the verge of crushing the life out Palm, which introduced a hail mary today in the form of the Pre, a touchscreen handheld with a slide out keyboard--good luck with that.

What's it all mean? Well, assuming the analysts figure out that the iPhone and iPod touch really are ultra-portable personal computers--different from netbooks, but still competing for the same dollars--Apple will once again be crowned king of the 2008 holiday shopping season...
