Macworld Expo 1998 - New York
After almost two weeks in New York, everyone was very happy to get back home. While Brian has been in New York a number of times, this was my first trip. We left early for New York to do some sight seeing and to catch the fireworks for the 4th of July before Macworld started up. The city is an amazing place, but two weeks in Times Square is a little too much for anyone.
While in New York, I got to meet a number of people from other Mac news sites, vendors/resellers, and our every day readers. We also met a number of people from New York who made our visit one to remember. While in the city, I did some research to find what restaurants actually offer free refills for Coke, and I devised a way to map out the cost of living in Manhattan. I found that the cost of living on a certain block is directly reflected by the cost of the a Quarter Pound Cheeseburger value meal at McDonalds. (Just south of Central Park was the highest I found)
The city isn't as big and bad as everyone makes it out to be. New York as really changed in the past years, and Times Square is a direct reflection of that. You can see it in everything from the friendly street sign reminders to pick up after your dog, to the not so subtle threat of $350 fine for honking your car horn. The city smells, makes your eyes water, and makes you feel like taking at least two showers a day -- but there's nothing like it.
I'm a little disappointed the show is being moved back to Boston because I'm sure it won't be nearly as much fun. We'll probably just do the usual fly in, see the show, and fly out routine The final results of New York the show will be out this week, however rumors have it that the show was smaller than last year's Boston show. This was expected, however every vendor we talked to said traffic to their booths were well above typical Boston shows.
