1Password demos upcoming passkey support

1Password is planning to implement passkey support. Support is expected in early 2023 for the desktop app and mobile apps to follow. Passkey is a crypto key solution to authenticate without conventional passwords. The system works by holding a private key on a device that can verify identity. The private key is never exposed, and because no passwords are saved with a login, there are no password breaches.

1Password users can try out a demo to get a feel for how authentication would work with passkey accounts. They also have a video explaining the feature.

Apple is implementing support for passkey to integrate into its Keychain password manager. The benefits of a third-party passkey solution are the same as using a password manager. Third-party offers portability and cross-platform support in addition to unique features. Also, people will likely be using passwords for quite a while as passkey will only be supported in some places.
