Apple Self Service Repair program launches

Apple's new customer self-service program is now available. Currently, there are a limited number of supported devices. Support includes parts, manuals, and tools for performing what Apple considers the most common repairs. The program allows customers to perform service on devices they own using authentic parts and appropriate tools.

The new online store offers more than 200 individual parts and tools, enabling customers who are experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices to complete repairs on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups and iPhone SE (3rd generation), such as the display, battery, and camera. Later this year the program will also include manuals, parts, and tools to perform repairs on Mac computers with Apple silicon.

The initial offering is underwhelming, but a good start if Apple is sincere in its desire to empower its customers to service their devices. Hopefully, over time, the selection of components and supported devices will grow beyond the most recently released products.

Interestingly, Apple is making available pretty substantial tool kits. The kits are available for rent on a week-long basis for $49. The price includes shipping. The kits come in rugged cases and appear to provide the tools and rigs to properly perform repairs. The kit is dependent on the device and repair. The kits may not be necessary for repairs, but would seem to make the job easier and does demonstrate a commitment from Apple to make the available repairs as approachable as possible.
