New 27-inch 5K Retina Apple Studio Display

Apple today introduced a new 5K Studio Display with interesting integrated capabilities.

Apple has struggled over the years to justify offering display products. Aside from aesthetics and occasional custom cabling, Apple hasn't made a very compelling case for buying an Apple-branded display. One could find similar or better displays from other brands, often using the same display tech or better. As a result, there have been dry spells of Apple-branded displays. Or as recently, limited to boutique products like the current high-end Pro Display XDR. Apple seems to have found a way to add unique value to displays with the new Studio Display.

The Apple Studio Display contains an A13 processor to operate onboard multimedia capabilities. The display included an integrated 12 MP Ultra Wide camera. The camera supports Center Stage, which hasn't been available on the Mac until now. Center Stage automatically adjusts the camera view based on FaceTime participants. Also added are six speakers that support Spatial Audio, plus a three mic array with directional beamforming tech.

Beyond the multimedia tech, the display has one Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports. The display is a 27-inch 5K Retina display with 5120 by 2880 resolution and 600 nits brightness. An optional feature for nano-textured glass help reduces room glare. The display also comes with three options: a tilt-adjustable stand, an adjustable tilt + height stand, and a VESA mount.

Pricing for the Apple Studio Display starts at $1599, with the nano-texture glass bumping that up to $1899. The tilt-adjustable stand is stock, and the height-adjustable stand adds $400. The VESA mount is an option for no charge over the stock stand.
