New iPod touch gets A10 Fusion boost

Apple today updates its iPod touch media device for additional horsepower. The move appears to be geared for augmented reality functions, which might give some insights into its near term plans. The iPod touch has long been an entry-level into iOS with a relatively low device price and no wireless service. The iPod touch starts out at $199.

The update brings the A10 Fusion CPU to the device, which Apple says doubles its performance.

"We’re making the most affordable iOS device even better with performance that is twice as fast as before, Group FaceTime and augmented reality starting at just $199," said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing. "The ultra-thin and lightweight design of iPod touch has always made it ideal for enjoying games, music and so much more wherever you go."

The $199 price includes 32 GB of memory, a 128 GB version is available for $299 and a 256 GB model for $399. All models are available for sale starting today.
