Apple confirms end of AirPort routers

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple confirmed it is discontinuing its line of WiFi AirPort devices. The company said it would continue selling remaining inventory. The company hasn't updated its hardware products in about five years. In addition, the software has seen little attention outside of security updates. In fact, a few years back Apple essentially redesigned the software stripping away many functions. Some functions slowly returned, but not all.

I've stuck with the AirPort products just out of simplicity. Back to Mac works simply enough through the firewall and also attaching a drive for Time Machine backup was slick. Feature-wise, AirPort was lacking with most advanced controls found in other routers missing.

Apple still has AirPort products on its website, so it hasn't vanished. I'm wondering how long Apple will commit to maintaining the software, but I'm guessing considering a large number of products in use Apple will still offer critical security updates.
