Report: Apple may shifted car development

Bloomberg:

The initiative is now prioritizing the development of an autonomous driving system, though it's not abandoning efforts to design its own vehicle. That leaves options open should the company eventually decide to partner with or acquire an established car maker, rather than build a car itself. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

This follows the reported hire of BlackBerry's former head of automotive software division.

I think it's given whatever Apple is working on here will have some kind of driver-assisted automation. It could be Apple is hedging its bet with a Plan B. If it's car building plans don't pan out, they will still have a viable vehicle solution.

Really though, if Apple is to launch a car, it needs to have the software and automation part down. This would seem the hardest part and the biggest reason anyone would buy a car from Apple. It would make sense to see greater activity at this time on the software side of things.
